NYC Stapedectomy Surgery
Restoring Hearing Loss Caused by Otosclerosis
DR. NEIL SPERLING IS ONE OF THE MOST EXPERIENCED STAPEDECTOMY SURGEONS IN MANHATTAN AND STATEN ISLAND.
Otosclerosis is a hearing condition that can slowly make it harder and harder for you to hear. This is caused by spongy bone hardening around the stapes, the third of three bones in the middle ear. The stapes is the smallest bone in the human body. A highly effective treatment for otosclerosis is stapedectomy/stapedotomy surgery, a procedure which removes the stapes and then replaces it with a prosthesis, or artificial bone. Book an appointment with Dr. Sperling, one of the leading stapedectomy surgeons in Staten Island and NYC.
A stapedectomy/stapedotomy surgery may feature:
- General or local anesthesia
- Ear drum and bones evaluation
- Laser removal of the diseased stapes bone
- A metal stapes replacement prosthesis inserted
This surgery has been the main form of treatment for otosclerosis since the 1960’s but its origins date back to the 1870’s. With numerous advancements in surgical technique and laser technology stapedectomy/stapedotomy is now highly effective and safe surgery. The procedure only takes around an hour to complete under local or general anesthesia and patients are usually discharged within a few hours. At the office of Neil M. “If you want a physician of intensely high skill who can operate through a keyhole slit a few millimeters across and replace the minute ossicles of the ear with titanium parts, then you go see Dr Sperling. His patients call Dr. Sperling a miracle worker. I interviewed a dozen of them, and far more than one, even the calmest among them, say the same thing in the same words.”

What is Stapedectomy/Stapedotomy Surgery?
Stapes surgery is a surgical procedure of the middle ear that is performed to improve hearing.
The stapes bone is typically mobile but if it gets stuck in a fixed position then a conductive hearing loss results. If the disease process is due to abnormal mineralization of the temporal bone called otosclerosis then hearing can be improved with a stapedectomy/stapedotomy surgery. This surgery improves hearing by removing the stapes bone and replacing it with a micro prosthesis.

What Should I Know Before the Operation?
Stapedectomy/Stapedotomy surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. During your preoperative visit, your medical history, physical examination, a discussion about details of your surgical procedure and the associated risks and benefits will be discussed. At this time you will want to let Dr. Sperling know about any medications you are taking including dosage and frequency as well as any known drug allergies.
What Can I Expect After the Operation?
Following the surgery, most patients are able to go home that evening or the next morning. It is best to not blow your nose for one week after the surgery and you should keep water out of the ear for at least 2 weeks following the operation. Do not go swimming right after surgery.
If at any time after the surgery you experience sudden hearing loss, pain, dizziness or any new symptom related to the operated ear, you should notify Dr. Sperling immediately. Complications from this surgery are very rare.
How Long Does the Surgery Take?
Stapedectomy/Stapedotomy surgery is done in an operating room under general anesthesia and takes about 1-2 hours to complete. Our patients typically rest for 1-3 hours before they are sent home.
